A man has been arrested by police after stalking a hair salon owner while carrying a hand axe and assaulting a bystander who tried to intervene.
The Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station announced that it has booked and is investigating a man in his 60s, referred to as A, on charges of violating the Stalking Punishment Act, special assault, and carrying a weapon in a public place.
A is suspected of encountering a woman in her 40s, referred to as B, who is the owner of a hair salon he used to visit, at around 1:30 a.m. on the 22nd. When she rejected his attempts to talk, he allegedly followed her around and stalked her.
He is also accused of swinging a 30-centimeter-long hand axe when a man in his 30s who witnessed the situation tried to stop him.
Although A fled the scene, police tracked his movements using CCTV and other means, arresting him in an alleyway about 200 meters away roughly 10 minutes after receiving the report.
Police confirmed that there were no prior reports of stalking or similar incidents between A and B.
Believing that A suffers from a mental illness, the police took measures for his emergency hospitalization.
As a protective measure for the victim, B has been registered as a recipient of 112 safety measures.
