▲ Suspect in the murder of a Chinese student, disguised in women's clothing
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage near the residence of a 31-year-old Chinese national and part-time lecturer, surnamed Jung, has captured his actions before and after murdering a 25-year-old Chinese exchange student, surnamed A, in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, and mutilating and abandoning her body across various locations.
Despite committing a brutal crime that defies common sense, Jung appeared calm. He attempted to throw off police investigations by impersonating the victim and was seen casually discarding a plastic bag containing an unknown object at a garbage disposal area near his home.
According to CCTV footage secured on the 27th with the consent of residents near Jung's home, Jung and the victim, A, were first captured around 2:00 a.m. on the 20th.
At the time, A was pulling a carrier luggage and heading toward Jung's residence.
A subsequently met with Jung and entered the residence together.
There did not appear to be any signs of coercion, as A followed Jung into the building almost immediately after him.
Jung's movements were captured on CCTV again at around 10:30 p.m. that same day.
This was 20 hours after the time Jung confessed to police that he had murdered A.
He was wearing a skirt, hat, and mask to cover his face in an attempt to look like the victim, A.
After leaving the residence with the carrier, he traveled to Dongdaegu Station and turned off the victim's mobile phone to confuse the investigation.
About two hours later, around midnight, Jung returned to his residence after changing into different clothes, such as a hoodie.
While he was dressed in women's clothing when he left the house, he returned in completely male attire.
The footage also vividly captured Jung carrying on with his daily life casually despite having committed a brutal crime after returning home.
Jung left his residence once more at 2:20 p.m. on the 21st.
This time coincided with one day after Jung stated he murdered A inside his residence, and several hours before filing a false missing person report with the police.
Captured on CCTV, Jung was seen leaving his home wearing a black top and bottom with white sneakers.
In one hand, he was holding a black plastic bag containing an object about the size of two soccer balls, while operating his mobile phone with the other hand.
He then discarded the plastic bag at a garbage dump dozens of meters away from his residence and turned back toward his home.
Garbage in that area is collected daily by a cleaning company, excluding Sundays, and processed at a local incineration plant.
Because of this, there is a high probability that the plastic bag discarded by Jung was collected by the cleaning company.
Given that Jung stated he murdered A, mutilated her body, and abandoned it in various places, this point raises the possibility that the bag contained murder tools.
In fact, police conducted searches at incineration facilities and other locations to verify whether Jung had disposed of physical evidence related to the crime.
Considering these abnormal circumstances that defy common sense, police are reviewing a psychopathetic personality checklist examination for Jung.
During the investigation, Jung claimed that a conflict with A, with whom he was in a romantic relationship, was the motive for the crime. However, police are conducting supplementary investigations, such as forensic analysis of mobile phones, considering the possibility that he made statements favorable to himself given that the victim is dead.
