U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the 27th (local time) to rename Lake Ontario, which lies between the United States and Canada, to "Lake America."
This follows his announcement two days prior on social media platform Truth Social that he was considering the name change, which he has now moved to execute through an executive order.
The move is being interpreted as a provocative measure targeting Canada amid a worsening trade war between the U.S. and Canada.
Lake Ontario is a large lake situated between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York.
As one of the five Great Lakes of North America, it serves as a border between the two countries.
Upon taking office early last year, President Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," and barred a reporter from the Associated Press from White House events after the news agency insisted on using the original name, Gulf of Mexico.
