Authorities have launched an investigation after a worker fell to his death while performing exterior wall waterproofing work at Ewha Womans University in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and other authorities stated that a male worker in his 50s is believed to have fallen from a height of about 15 meters at around 2:15 p.m. yesterday (August 26) while working on an exterior wall using a hanging scaffold suspended by ropes.
The accident is reportedly believed to have occurred because the ropes attached to the scaffold were not securely fixed.
Along with investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are reviewing the possibility of applying charges of professional negligence resulting in death or violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act against Ewha Womans University as the project owner and the construction company.
However, it is reported that Ewha Womans University, as the project owner, is not subject to punishment under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act unless other charges are revealed later.
An official from the Ministry of Employment and Labor said, "We understand that the workplace where the accident occurred has five or more employees, so we view it as subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act," adding, "We are currently investigating."
