SBS "Tails of Tales" is set to uncover the truth behind the Gwangju Complex Incident, which was once surrounded by shocking rumors of cannibalism.
Airings on the 27th, "Tails of Tales" will present an episode titled "Shadow City - The 1971 Gwangju Complex Incident," featuring singer and actor Nam Gyu-ri, actor Yoon Byung-hee, and Lee Kwang-ki as listeners to look back at the history of the first large-scale urban poor protest shouting for the right to survival.
During the Park Chung-hee administration, Seoul Mayor Kim Hyun-ok, known as the bulldozer, demolished Seoul's shantytowns and forcibly relocated residents to the Gwangju Complex. However, driven into a barren wasteland lacking even basic infrastructure such as water and electricity, the residents suffered from disease and famine, and bizarre rumors even spread that a mother, driven by hunger, boiled and ate her own newborn baby.
Nam Gyu-ri, participating as a listener on the show, deeply empathized with the story, saying, "Unimaginable things were happening to us." She confessed to her own difficult past as a housing-vulnerable person, sharing, "I also lived in a rooftop room, a half-basement, and a goshiwon. When heavy rain poured, the water in the rooftop room wouldn't drain. When I came home, everything was floating around, it was that harsh."
"Tails of Tales," featuring the truth of the Gwangju Complex stained with grim rumors and the reality of the "Shanty Building Clearance Plan," will air on Thursday the 27th at 10:20 PM.
