A landslide near the border of China's Tibet Autonomous Region and Nepal has resulted in a large number of casualties and missing persons, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported today (the 26th).
According to the report, a landslide occurred on the Nepal side at around 10:30 a.m. local time today, causing heavy casualties at the Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region.
The specific number of deaths, injuries, and missing persons has not yet been released.
Following the accident, Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed that "the top priority is to mobilize all available means to search for and rescue the missing, evacuate residents in danger, promptly treat the injured, and minimize casualties to the greatest extent possible." He added, "We must strengthen monitoring and early warning, focus on scientific rescue, and prevent secondary disasters."
Xi further emphasized, "All regions and relevant departments must prepare for worst-case scenarios, earnestly implement various measures related to flood and typhoon prevention," and prevent major disasters and accidents through inspections and rectifications.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also instructed authorities to quickly ascertain the number of missing and affected persons, mobilize rescue capabilities to carry out emergency rescue operations, and ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen communication and coordination with relevant countries.
Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Commission, is heading to the site with heads of relevant departments to direct rescue and recovery operations, Xinhua reported.
