Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok stepped down from his position today (August 26).
During a press conference at the National Assembly, Lee stated, "For a little over three months since the local elections, I have contemplated and proposed ways for the party to stand on its own feet and reform, but these efforts failed to gain sufficient traction within the party. Today, I am stepping down as leader of the Reform Party."
He emphasized, "This is no one's fault. The responsibility for failing to persuade others rests entirely on me as party leader."
Background factors cited for his resignation include a series of setbacks, such as poor results in the June 3 local elections and the staged knife attack controversy involving candidate Jung Yi-han, who ran for Busan mayor.
Following Lee's resignation, the Reform Party leadership, including Policy Committee Chair Lee Ju-young and Supreme Council members Kim Jung-chul and Kim Sung-yeol, also resigned en masse.
The Reform Party is expected to be temporarily led by Chun Ha-ram, acting party leader and floor leader.
