Police Conduct Full Review of Closed Missing Persons Cases in Gyeonggi Province Over Past Three Years Following Jeju Case Controversy

In the wake of the controversy surrounding the false closure of a missing person case in Jeju, the Gyeonggi Nambu and Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agencies have initiated reviews into how missing persons cases were handled within the province.

The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced that it is conducting a comprehensive investigation into 77,506 missing persons cases closed within its jurisdiction over the past three years, spanning from 2024 to July 31, to determine whether they were handled appropriately.

The Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police Agency also stated that it is carrying out a full inspection of 19,033 missing persons cases closed over the three-year period from 2024 to August 22.

Police plan to prioritize and intensively review closed cases where the status of the missing person was not verified through an in-person meeting, but instead closed remotely. If deficiencies are found, they intend to take thorough measures, such as ordering reinvestigations.
