Controversy has arisen over MBC's variety show "I Live Alone" following allegations that Jun Hyun-moo's impromptu trip to Kazakhstan was fabricated.
Over two weeks on August 14 and 21, "I Live Alone" aired Jun Hyun-moo's travelogue in Kazakhstan. On the broadcast, Jun Hyun-moo arrived at Incheon International Airport without a destination and spontaneously decided to travel to Almaty, Kazakhstan, for a 1-night, 2-day trip.
However, following the broadcast, viewers raised suspicions that the trip, portrayed as impromptu, was actually meticulously planned in advance, noting that processes such as local car rentals and staff flight ticketing went suspiciously smoothly.
In particular, the local car rental process became a decisive subject of criticism. Jun Hyun-moo explained that he booked a rental car before boarding the plane and rented the car upon arrival by sending photos of his passport and driver's license. However, actual local visitors strongly pointed out that Kazakhstan requires a separate license notarization procedure through an embassy or consulate, criticizing that the show portrayed it as casually as renting a car in Jeju Island.
Additionally, viewers questioned how it was possible to secure flight tickets for a large production crew accompanying him for the shoot if it was truly an impromptu trip, given that he wasn't traveling alone. Criticism continued that it was an excessive production that deceived viewers, especially after it was revealed that Almaty's tourism authorities had posted content on their official website stating they supported the filming of "I Live Alone."
Online commenters reacted sharply, saying, "Why lie and call it an impromptu trip when you can just say it was planned in advance?", "Only the people who believed it was an impromptu trip look like fools", and "What are they going to do if they provide wrong information? People who followed the broadcast must have thought car rentals were easy locally, and imagine how difficult that would make things for them."
On the other hand, some defense voices emerged, saying, "Given the nature of variety programs, a certain level of staging for entertainment value should be taken into account," and "It is merely an entertainment composition reflecting the cast member's usual tendency to enjoy impromptu travel."
Amidst the Kazakhstan episodes recording high viewership ratings and strong buzz while getting swept up in fabrication suspicions, the debate surrounding the authenticity of reality variety shows is expected to continue for a while.
