As the United States pressures third-country companies and institutions trading with Iran by threatening sanctions, China has pushed back, vowing to safeguard its rights and interests with all necessary measures.
During a regular briefing today (the 25th), Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian addressed a question regarding the expansion of U.S. sanctions against Iran, stating, "China-Iran cooperation has consistently been conducted within the framework of international law and should not be subject to interference or obstruction."
He added, "China is closely monitoring relevant developments," emphasizing that the country "will resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests through all necessary measures."
"China has repeatedly stated its firm opposition to illegal and unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and have not been approved by the United Nations Security Council," Lin further noted. "What is most urgent right now is to ease tensions and promptly return to the track of dialogue and negotiation."
Previously, the U.S. administration announced what it terms the "Maximum Economic Pressure Operation" on local time the 24th, targeting third countries that trade with Iran.
The core of this measure is to impose secondary sanctions on third-country companies and institutions engaging in transactions with Iran across digital assets (cryptocurrency), technology, gold, aviation, and maritime sectors.
Furthermore, the U.S. designated over 60 entities, individuals, and vessels worldwide as new sanction targets under the rationale that they are assisting the Iranian regime in acquiring nuclear and missile technology, conducting cyber operations, and generating oil revenues.
