A man in his 20s indicted for spraying hazardous substances on the toilet paper in a women's restroom at a commercial building has been sentenced to prison in the first trial.
Judge Kang Sung-jin of Criminal Single Division 16 at the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim, a 21-year-old social service agent indicted on charges including injury, to eight months in prison today.
The court also ordered him to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and banned him from employment at institutions related to children and adolescents for five years.
The court rebuked him, stating, "The defendant engaged in a dangerous act of applying hazardous substances to toilet paper to inflict injury, and even concealed and discarded unfavorable evidence upon the advice of a lawyer."
Regarding the charge of illegal filming, the court added, "It induces fear and anxiety that anyone could become a target without their knowledge, which must be dealt with strictly."
However, the court explained that it took into consideration factors such as reaching settlements with the victims, turning himself in to investigative authorities, and reflecting on his crimes.
Kim was indicted and detained on charges of injuring one woman by spraying hazardous substances on the toilet paper of a women's restroom in a commercial building in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of April 26.
He is also accused of intruding into the same restroom seven times between January and April of this year to install and film with a ultra-small camera, for which prosecutors demanded a nine-year prison sentence last month.
