▲ Body Believed to Be Missing Jang Mi-ran Found
The National Police Agency announced today (August 25) that it has placed all four members of the command line at the Jeju Seobu Police Station on administrative leave in connection with the false closure of a long-term missing person case in Jeju.
The individuals subject to this measure are the former and current chiefs of the Jeju Seobu Police Station, the head of the detective division, and the leader of the missing persons team at the time the case was first received.
While holding them accountable for their supervisory responsibilities regarding case handling, the National Police Agency is also conducting an internal inspection to verify the facts concerning their command and oversight duties.
Police Inspector A, affiliated with the Jeju Seobu Police Station, is suspected of falsely reporting that contact had been made with 37-year-old Jang Mi-ran, who went missing last May, and closing the case.
The body believed to be Jang was found on the 24th, 104 days after she went missing, at a palm tree farm about 400 meters away from her accommodation.
Inspector A was also found to have falsely closed a case involving a man in his 60s who was reported missing last month.
The man was also found dead on the 22nd, the day after the case was re-reported.
Police are conducting a comprehensive investigation into all 298 missing person reports handled and closed by Inspector A.
