President Lee Jae-myung has ordered a thorough investigation into the entire police investigation process following the discovery of a body believed to be Jang Mi-ran, who went missing in Jeju last May.
Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Relations Kang Yu-jung stated during a briefing today (the 24th) that "upon hearing the news of the body's discovery, President Lee expressed his profound sorrow and regret."
President Lee also instructed authorities to review the circumstances underซึ่ง the missing persons case was closed, as well as the overall police command and supervision system.
Furthermore, President Lee ordered the formulation of internal police reform measures, including institutional safeguards and fundamental renewal plans, Secretary Kang explained.
Jang was reported missing last May, but the case became a controversy after it was revealed that a police officer identified as Inspector A, then with the Jeju Seobu Police Station, falsely told the reporter that they had "made contact" and arbitrarily closed the case.
It was revealed that Inspector A had also falsely closed the missing person case of a man in his 60s who was found dead in a skeletal state on the 22nd, in addition to Jang's case.
Some observers note that the current incident is drawing even greater attention because inappropriate police investigations have come under fire at a time when public concerns remain unresolved regarding the ruling bloc's push to completely abolish the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority.
