Actor Shim Eun-kyung is set to actively engage with audiences on the silver screen this year through two highly anticipated films in the second half of the year.
The first work to meet audiences is the highly anticipated Chuseok holiday release "The Assassin(s)" (directed by Hur Jin-ho). "The Assassin(s)" traces the suspicions and masterminds behind the assassination of the First Lady that shocked the Republic of Korea on August 15, 1974. Notably, it has been officially invited to the Gala Presentation section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, garnering global anticipation.
Shim plays Lee Kang-ja, a bright and assertive helper who assists "Young-il" (Lee Min-ho) with his reporting in Japan. Amidst the tense core of the incident, she is expected to bring vibrancy to the character with her unique personality and showcase a brilliant presence even among a formidable cast of actors.
Following this, during the 31st Busan International Film Festival (held from October 6 to 15), she will meet audiences through director Kim Jong-kwan's new film "Day and Night Are to Each Other," which has been selected as the opening film.
"Day and Night Are to Each Other" is a film featuring cheerful, unpretentious, and lovely conversations shared by four pairs of men and women who pass through a single cafe during the seasonal transition from summer to autumn.
In this work, Shim plays Hye-jin, a web novel writer. Working alongside Lee Hee-jun, who plays film director Dong-nam, she leads a sparkling first encounter and delightful conversations amidst the subtle shifts of the seasons. Under the direction of Kim Jong-kwan, who captures the minute textures of everyday emotions, Shim's signature delicate and deep acting is expected to deliver warm empathy and lingering resonance to audiences.
After reaching her heyday by driving domestic box office hits such as the films "Sunny" and "Miss Granny," Shim has been active in the Japanese film industry. She won Best Actress at the Japanese Academy Film Prize for "The Journalist" and subsequently captured the Kinema Junpo Best Actress award for "Travel and Days."
Having focused on her activities in Japan, Shim has been pouring her heart into domestic activities starting this year. In particular, by releasing two films in the second half of the year alone, she is set to closely communicate with domestic fans.
