An arrest warrant has been requested for an active-duty police officer who was emergency-arrested for falsely closing a missing persons case under their jurisdiction.
The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced today (August 24) that it has requested an arrest warrant for Police Officer A on charges of dereliction of duty, falsification and uttering of official electronic records, and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means.
Police explained, "We requested the arrest warrant due to concerns over the destruction of evidence and flight."
Officer A is accused of lying to the reporter of a missing persons case filed in May by claiming that they had "made contact" with the missing person, a 37-year-old surnamed Jang, arbitrarily closing the case, and deleting Jang's data from the missing person profiling system's management list.
Officer A is also accused of using a similar method to falsely close another missing persons case on July 2.
Jang has remained missing for about three months, and massive searches are underway, while the other missing person was found dead at a location in Jeju on August 22.
The false closing of cases by Officer A, an active-duty police officer, has exposed institutional shortcomings surrounding how police handle missing persons cases.
