The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on August 23 that it will supply 20,000 tons of government-stockpiled seafood to the market ahead of Chuseok next month.
This release volume is the largest on record. The ministry explained that the move aims to stabilize prices and reduce inflation pressure by increasing the supply of key fishery products facing rising demand ahead of the holiday.
Specifically, from August 24 to September 27, the ministry will supply six items—pollack (15,700 tons), squid (1,700 tons), mackerel (1,500 tons), hairtail (800 tons), croaker (200 tons), and dried anchovies (100 tons)—to major traditional markets, large supermarkets, and online and offline wholesale markets nationwide.
The release also includes convenience-oriented products, such as mackerel fillets, frozen pollack slices for jeon, and whole dried pollack.
Consumers can purchase these government-released seafood products at prices up to 40% lower than regular market rates, the ministry emphasized.
"To ensure the public can purchase seafood at reasonable prices ahead of the Chuseok holiday, we are supplying a record scale of stockpiled seafood," Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Hwang Jong-woo said. "We will continue to closely monitor the supply-and-demand situation and price trends of major fishery products to smoothly implement stabilization measures that citizens can truly feel."
