German professional football club FC Bayern Munich won the Super Cup, a single-match tournament signaling the start of the new season, powered by the rock-solid defense of South Korean national team center-back Kim Min-jae.
Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 2026-2027 Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup held at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany, today (23rd).
Kim Min-jae, who had been considered the "third option" in Munich's central defense, raised expectations by making the starting lineup alongside Jonathan Tah and playing the full match.
In addition to his stellar defense, Kim recorded a 94% pass success rate.
Munich claimed victory in the Super Cup for the second consecutive year.
Reaching the top of the tournament for the 12th time in history, Munich solidified its position at the top of this category.
Dortmund, in second place, has won the competition six times.
Munich signaled an early victory by scoring two goals in the first half.
Nathaniel Brown, whose primary position is left-back but started as a surprise attacking midfielder, scored the opening goal in the 28th minute of the first half.
When Michael Olise went down inside the penalty area following a foul-like challenge by an opponent, Brown calmly finished the loose ball with a left-footed shot to shake the net.
In the 46th minute of the first half, Olise intercepted a sloppy opponent backpass, shook off defenders with lightning-fast penetration, and scored from the right side of the penalty area to make it 2-0.
Dortmund launched a fierce counterattack in the second half, pulling one back through Fabio Silva's left-footed shot following a cross from Daniel Svensson.
Dortmund had to play with 10 men in the closing stages after defender Ramy Bensebaini was sent off for a rough foul in the 45th minute of the second half.
Munich won both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal last season.
Munich manager Vincent Kompany said, "Some might think that since we swept the titles last season, we will show a downward trend this time, but that will not happen. We do not rest, and we will challenge for the championship in every competition."
Munich will play its Bundesliga opening match away against Stuttgart at 3:30 AM on the 29th.
