▲ Joint strike rally for the automotive industry in front of Hyundai Motor headquarters
The labor union of Hyundai Motor (the Hyundai Motor branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union) has postponed its planned strike for the 24th following the decision to resume this year's wage negotiations.
Hyundai Motor management and the union announced today (the 23rd) that they will hold their 17th round of negotiations at the Ulsan plant on the 24th.
Consequently, the union decided not to go ahead with the partial strike originally scheduled for 4 hours on the 24th out of the planned 4-hour partial strikes for both the 24th and 25th.
Whether to carry out the remaining strike actions will be determined based on the outcome of the resumed negotiations.
Management and the union are currently locked in a tug-of-war over issues including the scale of this year's wage increase, a 50% hike in bonuses, the reinstatement of union members dismissed for illegal activities during past union activities, and the extension of the retirement age.
After negotiations stalled following their initial meeting on May 6, the union frequently staged partial strikes lasting two to six hours, and staged a full eight-hour strike on the 21st for the first time in 10 years.
The cumulative strike time stands at 60 hours so far. Because both the morning and afternoon shifts of technical (production) workers have gone on strike separately, the cumulative production line downtime is double that at 120 hours.
The automotive industry estimates that production disruptions have affected approximately 55,200 vehicles.
