An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 occurred 21 kilometers west-northwest of Haenam-gun, South Jeolla Province (referred to in the region as South Jeolla and Gwangju), at 6:43 a.m. today (the 23rd).
This is the strongest earthquake to occur on the Korean Peninsula and surrounding waters this year.
The depth of the epicenter was estimated to be 21 kilometers.
In the area west-northwest of Haenam, seven earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or higher have occurred over the past ten days. Including micro-earthquakes with magnitudes below 2.0, a total of 71 earthquakes have been recorded.
Earlier at 1:44 a.m. today (the 23rd), a magnitude 2.2 earthquake occurred in the waters 79 kilometers east of Seogwipo, Jeju.
It is reported that no damage has been reported in connection with either earthquake.
