A man in his 60s who dug up his uncle's grave and burned the remains using a gas sprayer has received a suspended prison sentence.
Chuncheon District Court Judge Koh Bum-jin, presiding over Criminal Single Division 2, announced that a 67-year-old man, A, who was indicted on charges of unearthing and damaging human remains from a grave and violating the Act on Funeral Services, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
A was put on trial for unearthing his uncle's grave located in Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province, in April of last year, taking out the remains, and burning them with an LPG gas sprayer at a location other than a cremation facility.
In addition to his uncle's grave, he also dug up another grave and burned the remains in the same manner.
Judge Koh stated in the ruling, "It is believed that the bereaved family members of the deceased suffered considerable psychological pain and shock due to the defendant's crime," adding, "The sentence was determined by taking into account factors such as the defendant admitting to all the crimes and having no prior criminal record for similar offenses."
