An elementary school administrative official who spent over 20 million won on personal items using a school card over a period of four years and even fabricated documents to cover up the embezzlement has been penalized.
Chuncheon District Court Judge Koh Beom-jin, presiding over Criminal Court Division 2, announced that 49-year-old A, who was indicted on charges of embezzlement in the course of business and falsification of official electronic records, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for one year, and ordered to perform 80 hours of community service.
A was brought to trial on charges of embezzling 21.6 million won in school funds through a total of 62 instances of purchasing personal items—starting with 210,000 won worth of knitting supplies from an online shopping mall using the school card in January 2021, and continuing until March 2025.
To hide the embezzlement, A manipulated expenditure resolution forms or created false estimates as if purchasing school facility consumables or tool sets.
Judge Koh explained the reasoning behind the sentencing, stating, "The sentence was determined by taking into consideration the fact that the defendant fully admitted to the crimes, is a first-time offender, and has repaid the full amount of the damages."
