U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is undertaking a massive recall in China.
Bloomberg reported on the 21st (local time) that Tesla is recalling approximately 3 million vehicles after China's State Administration for Market Regulation pointed out safety issues with the electric flush door handles on the vehicles.
Tesla has decided to add software that automatically rolls down the windows after an accident and attach labels indicating the location of the emergency manual release mechanisms.
Concerns have been raised that existing flush electronic handles fail to operate if a collision cuts off power, preventing passengers from escaping.
As a result, it has been estimated that at least 15 people have died because rescue workers were unable to open the doors when fires broke out following vehicle collisions.
Chinese authorities banned flush door handles early this year following a series of similar accidents involving other electric vehicles such as Xiaomi.
In addition to Tesla, recalls related to door handles were announced for other Chinese electric vehicle brands, bringing the total recall scale to 4.27 million vehicles across nine automakers.
