A family working as personal care assistants has been referred to prosecutors for seizing the home of a family member with intellectual disabilities and embezzling government subsidies.
The Pyeongtaek Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced yesterday (August 20) that it has forwarded four individuals, including a person in their 40s surnamed A, to the prosecution without detention on charges including quasi-fraud, occupational embezzlement, and violations of the Act on Assistance for Persons with Disabilities.
Related by family, A and the others registered as personal care assistants for the family of B, who suffers from an intellectual disability, between 2023 and 2024. Taking advantage of the victims' impaired judgment, they are accused of having a house located in Paengseong-eup, Pyeongtaek, and land worth 100 million won transferred to their own names.
They are also accused of arbitrarily using approximately 12 million won while managing the basic livelihood security benefit accounts of B's family, and forcing them to sign up for unnecessary insurance policies, making them shoulder 2 million won in premium payments.
In addition, they face charges of fraudulently collecting about 100 million won in government personal assistance benefits despite not actually performing personal care duties.
The police launched an investigation following a complaint from the victim's side, but decided not to forward the case in November of last year citing insufficient evidence.
However, upon receiving a request for reinvestigation from the prosecution, the police initiated supplementary investigations, uncovered evidence of the crimes committed by A and the others, and forwarded the case to the prosecution.
