This is a message posted by President Lee Jae-myung on his social media.
He stated that he sympathizes with the will and efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump to create conditions for peace on the Korean Peninsula, even by scaling back the South Korea-U.S. joint military drills, writing, "I express my respect for that decision."
He continued by saying, "I expect that President Trump's decision will lead to building trust and resuming dialogue between North Korea and the U.S., and ultimately to establishing a stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula," emphasizing that he himself "will do his best in the role of a 'pacemaker' to facilitate President Trump's 'peacemaker' efforts."
President Lee met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the presidential office.
Evaluating that South Korea-China relations are being "fully restored," he asked Minister Wang to maintain close communication on Korean Peninsula issues with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Office Director Wi Sung-lac.
During the South Korea-China foreign ministerial talks as well, the South Korean side explained President Lee's vision for peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula announced on Liberation Day, and requested China's constructive role for North Korea's prompt return to dialogue.
Foreign Minister Wang placed emphasis on a shift in the U.S. policy toward North Korea.
[Wang Yi / Chinese Foreign Minister: (The North Korea-U.S. summit) is a matter to be decided between North Korea and the United States. In particular, the U.S. must change its long-standing hostile policy toward North Korea.]
While the South Korean government has attached significance to President Trump's moves regarding North Korea and requested China's constructive role, China has distanced itself by maintaining the stance that a change in the U.S. hostile policy toward North Korea must come first.
