President Lee Jae-myung met with Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister, and called for continued close strategic communication regarding issues on the Korean Peninsula.

During a meeting with visiting Foreign Minister Wang at the Presidential Office this morning (August 20), President Lee said, "Following successive meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping last year and this year, we are creating tangible results in the full restoration of South Korea-China relations." He added, "I am pleased that based on political trust, the two governments are strengthening horizontal and mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic sector, and that friendship and trust between the two peoples are also growing stronger."

President Lee then asked Wang to maintain close strategic communication with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Office Director Wi Sung-lac regarding bilateral relations and Korean Peninsula issues.

Conveying warm greetings from President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang stated, "Based on the common understandings reached through the mutual state visits of the two leaders, South Korea-China relations are maintaining a stable upward trajectory." He added, "We will actively play a role in faithfully implementing the follow-up measures agreed upon by the two leaders so that this favorable momentum can be sustained and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year can be meaningfully marked."

Wang also expressed hope that the South Korean government, which successfully hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju last year, would support and back the upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, this November.

He further stated that preparations would be made without a hitch to yield fruitful outcomes for high-level exchanges between the two countries in Shenzhen.

In response, President Lee said, "As the host country of last year's APEC, I wish for the successful hosting of this year's APEC in Shenzhen and will spare no necessary support."

He also stated, "As the meetings between the two leaders continue from Gyeongju last November and Beijing this January to Shenzhen this November, I hope we create abundant results that contribute to the lives of both peoples and further solidify South Korea-China relations."

Recalling his meeting with President Xi this January, President Lee also asked Wang to convey his special regards.

Wang responded that he would do so and expressed gratitude for the hospitality shown by President Lee and the South Korean government, according to the Presidential Office.
