The National Assembly passed an amendment to the National Assembly Act today (August 20) led by the Democratic Party of Korea, shortening the review period for fast-tracked legislative bills from the existing 330 days to 90 days.
During the plenary session today, the National Assembly approved the amendment to the National Assembly Act with 153 votes in favor and 81 votes against out of 234 lawmakers present.
The amendment was submitted to the plenary session on July 31, but failed to pass as the People Power Party launched a filibuster.
The filibuster was automatically terminated at midnight on the same day due to the expiration of the July extraordinary session, and the vote took place today during the first plenary session of the August extraordinary session.
The Democratic Party spearheaded the revision of the National Assembly Act amid criticisms that the fast-track system has actually become an obstacle to the swift processing of bills.
The intent of the amendment is to significantly reduce the review period for bills designated as fast-track items to enable their prompt processing.
The People Power Party protested, claiming that the ruling party was unilaterally amending the National Assembly Act without sufficient deliberation.
