Three sanitation workers aboard a garbage truck were killed in a collision with a 25-ton dump truck at an intersection in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, during the early morning hours.

The accident occurred at around 4:03 a.m. today at the Dodong Intersection in Yeongcheon.

The 70-year-old male driver of the dump truck also sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

The impact of the crash tore off and heavily damaged the front end of the garbage truck, while the dump truck tipped over onto its left side.

The three deceased victims consist of two individuals in their 60s and one in their 40s. They were identified as sanitation workers employed by a private company contracted by the city of Yeongcheon to collect household waste.

They reportedly collected garbage across five neighborhoods in downtown Yeongcheon every day, and the accident occurred while they were heading to their work site for early morning cleaning duties.

Police stated that the crash occurred when the two vehicles entered the Dodong Intersection, which was operating under flashing signals at the time.

The Dodong Intersection operates with flashing signals from midnight to 5 a.m.

Police are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, including the direction of travel for both vehicles, by analyzing CCTV footage and vehicle black box recordings.
