The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced today (the 19th) that the lower-half South Korea-U.S. joint exercise, Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), will end early the day after tomorrow upon a proposal from the U.S. side.
The UFS was originally scheduled to run from the 17th to the 27th, meaning it will conclude six days ahead of schedule.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff explained that the allied joint field training exercises will also be downscaled, and that South Korea and the U.S. are currently discussing the specific details.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff added that the UFS wartime command post is being operated in a decentralized manner, split between CP Tango, an underground bunker in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
This marks an unprecedented situation with no prior historical precedent, as the exercises have been drastically scaled down mid-course in accordance with President Trump's directive to reduce joint drills.
