The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced today (August 17) that they are launching a research and development (R&D) project to develop smartwatches dedicated to the disaster safety communication network under the National Public Safety Emergency Response Research program.

This initiative aims to find solutions to disaster and safety issues using science and technology and apply them in the field. The current topic was decided after a research demand survey and expert review.

This is the final selected project among the 11 projects pursued this year.

Personnel carrying out disaster response missions, such as police officers and firefighters, have faced the burden of simultaneously carrying and operating disaster safety communication network terminals, radios, and personal mobile phones.

In addition, when an incident occurs, communications tend to overlap and surge, making it difficult to perceive core information or instructions.

Through this project, the government will develop smartwatches linked to the disaster safety communication network and establish a system where artificial intelligence (AI) analyzes and summarizes communication content to provide essential information to users.

The device will also include functions to monitor the user's heart rate, skin temperature, and location.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety projected that applying this technology in the field will reduce the equipment burden on disaster response personnel, enable them to clearly understand situations and missions, and contribute to preventing large-scale casualties.

The two ministries will provide approximately 900 million won in R&D funding for each project over a two-year period.

The public competition to select research institutions for the projects will run until September 7.
