▲ Tour bus overturns in Brazil
At least 10 people were killed after a tourist bus overturned on a road near Petropolis, a mountainous region in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to local police on the 16th (local time), the tourist bus was traveling from Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais toward Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro when it overturned at kilometer 91 of the BR-040 highway.
The accident left 10 passengers dead and 37 injured.
Police stated that all of the fatalities were women.
The Brazilian daily Folha de S.Paulo reported that approximately 50 people were believed to be on board the bus.
The section of the BR-040 highway where the accident occurred is a major arterial road connecting Brazil's interior to Rio de Janeiro. Known for its continuous steep descents, the area has frequently been the site of major bus accidents in the past.
Investigations revealed that the bus was an unauthorized, illegal vehicle.
The National Land Transportation Agency of Brazil stated that the accident bus was not registered to transport passengers, and the operating entity known as "Estrela Guia Turismo" was also an unregistered, illegal transport company.
Police are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, including potential speeding or mechanical failure.
