The South Korean and U.S. military authorities begin the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise today (Aug. 17), a regular joint drill for the defense of the Korean Peninsula in the event of an emergency.
Running through August 27, this year's UFS exercise incorporates lessons learned from recent warfare trends, with South Korea's participation scale remaining similar to previous years at around 18,000 personnel.
Meanwhile, as the United States introduced details of this exercise, it revealed a perspective seemingly linking it to the containment of China within the Indo-Pacific beyond the Korean Peninsula, drawing keen interest as to whether this reflects a shift in the nature of U.S. Forces Korea pursued by Washington.
