Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi did not mention "remorse" or a "pledge not to wage war" during the war-end memorial service for the war dead held at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo today (August 15).
While previous Japanese prime ministers have historically mentioned the suffering inflicted on neighboring countries and expressed remorse on the anniversary of the war's end, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe halted these references starting with the 2013 memorial address following his return to power in 2012.
Although former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reintroduced references to remorse and the pledge not to wage war last year after a 13-year hiatus, such expressions have disappeared from the memorial address once again with the launch of the Takaichi administration.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Takaichi offered a ritual fee to the Yasukuni Shrine in her capacity as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
