▲ People Power Party lawmakers denouncing Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young while answering reporters' questions
The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) urged lawmakers Na Kyung-won, Kim Gi-hyeon, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Kwon Young-jin of the People Power Party (PPP) to "face the judgment of the law" following their indictment without detention by the 2nd Comprehensive Special Counsel team on charges of obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant (special obstruction of official duties) against former President Yoon Suk-yeol last year.
DPK Spokesperson Kim Han-na stated in a written briefing today (August 15), "The sight of People Power Party lawmakers standing at the very front to form a human wall while the leader of the insurrection—who would have been justified to be arrested on the spot—faced off against police officers executing an arrest warrant incited public anger."
Spokesperson Kim criticized, "Even though the public clearly remembers lawmakers who make laws blocking the lawful execution of a warrant, People Power Party lawmakers are talking about 'political suppression' regarding the special counsel's indictment. This is truly adding insult to injury."
She continued, "A lawmaker's political claims only hold legitimacy within the boundaries of the law," pointing out, "Are they claiming that the status of a lawmaker sits above a court warrant and grants them almighty privileges?"
Spokesperson Kim added, "If lawmakers ignore the law, the rule of law loses its ground," urging, "Lawmakers Na Kyung-won, Kim Gi-hyeon, Yoon Sang-hyun, and Kwon Young-jin should faithfully participate in the trial procedures instead of making claims of a 'political special counsel' or 'opposition suppression' meant to shirk responsibility."
