The Ministry of Justice's Future Committee for Respecting Human Rights in Prosecution, launched with the goal of investigating alleged abuses of prosecutorial powers, has recently selected a total of 12 additional cases for truth-finding investigations through the review of public proposals.
The newly selected cases include the Seongnam FC allegations and the Gyeonggi Provincial corporate card misuse allegations.
The Seongnam FC case centers on suspicions that President Lee Jae-myung, during his past tenure as Seongnam mayor and owner of the Seongnam FC club, received 13.35 billion won in sponsorships from four companies and provided favors in return, such as changing land use zoning.
The Gyeonggi Provincial corporate card misuse allegations involve claims that President Lee used a total of approximately 100 million won in Gyeonggi Provincial budgets, including corporate cards, for personal expenses such as meals while serving as Gyeonggi provincial governor.
In addition, cases related to the past Democratic Party administration—such as the suspected preferential hiring of former President Moon Jae-in's former son-in-law and the Ulsan mayoral election intervention case—are reportedly included among the targets.
Previously, the Future Committee selected four cases involving President Lee during its first round of truth-finding investigation selections, including the Ssangbangwool illegal remittance to North Korea case, the Daejang-dong development scandal, the case involving former Democratic Research Institute Vice President Kim Yong, and the Wirye New Town case.
With this latest addition, the total number has increased to six.
Among the five cases in which President Lee stood trial as a defendant before proceedings were suspended, three are currently included.
Consequently, some members of the opposition bloc have raised claims suggesting there may be an intention to alleviate President Lee's future judicial risks.
The Future Committee was launched last June to investigate the truth behind cases where allegations of human rights violations or abuse of authority were raised during the exercise of prosecutorial power and to recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
