Police and fire authorities have launched a joint inspection to determine the exact cause of a fire at a 15th-floor apartment in Gayang-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, where a mother with a brain lesion disability and her son caring for her fell to their deaths.
Police, fire authorities, and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation announced that they began the joint inspection at around 10:40 AM today (August 14) inside the apartment unit where the fire broke out.
A report of the fire at the apartment was received at around 4:50 PM on the 11th.
Fire authorities arrived at the scene in five minutes and fully extinguished the fire at 6:08 PM, about one hour and ten minutes after it started.
During the initial search for casualties, the fire department determined there were no victims as no one was found inside the home, but later discovered the mother and son dead in the apartment's flowerbed.
Police presume that they jumped to their deaths as the fire spread.
The victims were residents of the unit, which was shared by a couple in their 60s and their 38-year-old son.
The father was away at the community service center to charge his motorized wheelchair at the time of the fire, thereby escaping the tragedy.
