As the prolonged war between the United States and Iran drives up domestic prices, U.S. President Donald Trump's approval ratings have plunged to a record low just three months ahead of the midterm elections.
Political media outlet The Hill recently reported that a recent poll showed 33 percent of respondents approved of President Trump's job performance, while 62 percent disapproved.
This leaves his net approval rating—calculated by subtracting the disapproval figure from the approval figure—at minus 29 percentage points. The outlet noted that this net approval is the lowest on record since regular polling began in 2009.
According to the analysis data released by pollsters Economist and YouGov, evaluations of President Trump varied significantly depending on the respondents' political affiliations.
Among Republican supporters, 79 percent approved and 21 percent disapproved. Among Democratic supporters, 4 percent approved and 95 percent disapproved, while independents showed 18 percent approval and 71 percent disapproval.
Compared to January of last year, near the start of Trump's second term, his net approval has plummeted sharply from plus 6 percent to minus 29 percent, with steep drops of nearly 50 percentage points seen among both Republican supporters and independents.
President Trump's current ratings for his second term are lower than those recorded during either his first term or the administration of Joe Biden.
Comparing the exact same points in time from the start of a presidential term, Trump's net approval during his first term stood at minus 10 percent, while Biden's was minus 17 percent.
Republican election strategists have warned that if this trend continues, it could deal a severe blow to the party in the upcoming midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
In the same Economist-YouGov poll, which asked respondents to evaluate Trump's job performance on specific issues, about 40 percent of respondents expressed support for President Trump's handling of immigration.
Additionally, 30 percent expressed confidence in his ability to "wisely handle international crises."
On the other hand, 53 percent of all respondents stated that President Trump is "too old" to carry out his duties.
