Some rain would be a welcome relief to ease the drought. Typhoon Chan-hom, the 15th typhoon of the season that made landfall in Japan yesterday (August 11), dissipated in the East Sea today, and the moisture left behind by the typhoon is moving into South Korea. However, it is expected to be insufficient to thoroughly drench the parched earth.

Tokyo, Japan, was directly within the path of Typhoon Chan-hom as it made landfall last night.
Winds were strong enough to make it difficult to walk while holding an umbrella.
Street trees were uprooted and blocked roads across downtown areas, and construction structures were torn apart by the wind, leaving steel frames swaying precariously.
About 60 flights were canceled at Haneda Airport.
Typhoon Chan-hom is the first typhoon to make landfall in Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan since the country began compiling meteorological statistics in 1951.
Moving in the reverse direction of typical typhoons from east to west, it cut across the Japanese archipelago and dissipated shortly after moving out into the East Sea at around 9:00 a.m. today.
The dissipation of the typhoon is also related to the winds blowing over South Korea.
Morning temperatures dropped sharply today.
Seoul's temperature fell to 21.3°C (70°F), making it the coolest day of August so far, as a high-pressure system stationed north of the country continued to blow in cold northeasterly winds.
These cold northeasterly winds caused the typhoon's structure to weaken more rapidly, leading to its dissipation as soon as it moved into the East Sea.
Taking a look at the current satellite imagery.
The typhoon used to exist right here, but now its structure has collapsed, leaving behind only moisture, which is slowly moving into South Korea.
Looking at the radar, as you can see, rain has started falling in the eastern regions starting today. Through tomorrow, 10 to 50 mm of rain is expected along the Gangwon East Coast and Gyeongbuk East Coast, while 10 to 40 mm of rain is forecasted for Gyeongnam coastal areas including Busan and Ulsan.
In the inland areas of Yeongnam, Honam, and Chungcheong Province, where the drought is severe, the atmosphere will become unstable due to the moisture left by the typhoon, bringing localized showers to some areas.
While this will be a welcome relief amid the severe drought, it is currently projected that not enough rain will fall to completely alleviate the drought.
