A former branch manager of an authorized LG Electronics retail store in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, who was indicted on charges of taking appliance purchase payments from customers including prospective newlyweds and going into hiding, has been sentenced to prison in the first-instance trials of two separate cases.
The Seoul Northern District Court sentenced the former LG Electronics sales manager, identified as A, to two years and six months in prison and one year in prison during sentencing hearings held in March and July respectively, on two counts of fraud.
Manager A is accused of stealing a total of 639.21 million won from 37 customers between July and October of last year.
A induced customers to pay in cash by promising discounts if they used affiliated credit cards, deceiving them with claims such as, "If you pay for the merchandise in advance (in cash) and then create an affiliated card later to make the payment, the amount paid today will be canceled and refunded within two to three days."
The embezzled funds were used to pay off personal debts in a revolving manner or spent on gambling.
The court pointed out that "the nature of the crime is grave considering the circumstances and details of the offenses," while adding that it also took into consideration factors such as A reflecting on the wrongdoing and LG Electronics compensating the victims.
