A man in his 20s who wandered around downtown Daejeon carrying weapons and was pursued by police has been subdued by a police special operations unit after a standoff at his home while holding a chainsaw.
The Daejeon Dunsan Police Station announced today (August 12) that it has apprehended and is investigating a man in his 20s, referred to as A, on charges of carrying a weapon in a public place and obstruction of business.
A is accused of obstructing police duties by wandering around the vicinity of Munjeong Children's Park in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, at 10:00 PM the previous day with weapons in both hands, and later confronting police who tracked his movements to his residence.
Citizens who saw A walking around with weapons called 112, and police were dispatched immediately, but A had already left the scene.
Police subsequently identified A, tracked him down, and located his residence in Galma-dong.
A, who resides on the fourth floor of a multi-family housing building, locked the door from the inside and threw glass bottles out of the window, engaging in a standoff with police for over an hour.
Notably, A was wearing a homemade plastic stab-proof vest and holding a chainsaw and a shield in both hands, which reportedly made subduing him with a Taser gun difficult.
Subsequently, the Daejeon Provincial Police Agency's special operations unit rappelled down from the rooftop of the multi-family housing building, opened a window to enter, and simultaneously forced open the front door, subduing and arresting A at 1:11 AM today, about three hours after the initial report.
Fire authorities were also dispatched to deploy an air mat to prepare for safety accidents, and residents reportedly came out of their homes to watch the scene during this process.
According to police, the weapon A carried in the park was not a chainsaw.
It was also investigated that A did not directly swing weapons at others, and there were no casualties.
During the police investigation, it was confirmed that A was wanted on obstruction of business charges by the Busan Bukbu Police Station and other agencies.
A police official stated, "A claims himself that he does not have a mental illness," adding, "We plan to figure out the exact details from A."
