The film "The Assassin(s)" is drawing attention as a new release that will complete production company Hive Media Corp's modern history universe.
"The Assassin(s)" tells the story of tracking the suspicions and masterminds behind the assassination of the First Lady, an event that shocked South Korea on August 15, 1974. Yoo Hai-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Minho star in the film.
Hive Media Corp, well known for "Inside Men," has consistently received favorable reviews for recreating historical events on screen with high craftsmanship, sharp insights into eras, and solid narratives.
In particular, the company gained attention as a master of period dramas by succeeding with two films capturing the turbulent 1970s: "The Man Standing Next" and "12.12: The Day". "The Man Standing Next" was praised for its actors' solid performances and powerful narrative, while "12.12: The Day," which depicted a decisive moment in South Korean modern history with unparalleled immersion, sparked a box office sensation that captivated 13 million moviegoers.
"The Assassin(s)" is set to depict the starting point of the modern history cinematic universe connected by "The Man Standing Next" and "12.12: The Day," unfolding a massive story by adding cinematic imagination to the motive of one of the greatest mysterious real-life incidents in South Korean modern history. Starting from the 1974 First Lady assassination incident—which everyone thought they knew about, yet still leaves numerous questions—the film pieces together scattered suspicions to dig into the reality of the mystery.
Director Huh Jin-ho, who has deeply illuminated eras and characters through works like "The Last Princess," "The Forbidden Dream," and "A Normal Family," is expected to deliver intense, unputdownable suspense by adding meticulous details to a story inspired by real events, based on his delicate directing skills. The process of persistently tracking the backside of the incident through the perspectives of a detective and a reporter goes beyond a mere recreation of events, deeply conveying the calling and responsibility of the figures who lived through that era with dense detail.
Furthermore, industry-leading veteran production crew members have all joined forces, including cinematographer Lee Mo-gae from "12.12: The Day," "Exhuma," and "Hunt," along with art director Kim Byung-han, lighting director Lee Sung-hwan, VFX supervisor Jung Jae-hoon, and costume director Choi Yoon-sun.
"The Assassin(s)" is scheduled for theatrical release this Chuseok holiday.
