Following OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini has also surpassed 1 billion users.
Google announced on the 11th (local time) that monthly active users (MAU) for the Gemini app have exceeded 1 billion, making it the fastest-growing service in Google's history.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai also shared the news via X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that the Gemini app has become Google's 14th service to secure 1 billion users.
Among Gemini app users, 63% communicate with the AI model using voice features instead of text input. Notably, busy parents were 43% more likely than general users to utilize voice features for daily, routine use.
The data also showed that in one out of every five voice conversations, users leverage not only voice but also camera video or screen-sharing capabilities.
Attachments were included in 38% of conversations originating from schools, which is presumed to be because students ask questions by attaching study-related documents or images.
Small businesses were found to primarily utilize Gemini's content generation features, such as video and image creation.
In addition, macOS users were found to use Gemini twice as often as users on other platforms, and more than 100 million users access the service via iPhones.
Prior to Gemini, OpenAI also announced that weekly active users (WAU) for its AI services, including ChatGPT, had surpassed 1 billion.
However, it is considered difficult to make a direct comparison because the user numbers announced by the two companies use different counting metrics.
This is because OpenAI calculates user numbers based on its entire suite of AI services, whereas Google calculated statistics based solely on users utilizing Gemini in app form.
Furthermore, OpenAI uses WAU—which tracks users who engage at least once a week—as its metric, while Google released MAU figures, which track users who engage at least once a month.
Nevertheless, there is a common assessment that both OpenAI and Google are successfully executing their strategy of increasing individual consumer bases to expand into the enterprise customer market.
In contrast to them, market research firms such as Sensor Tower estimate that Anthropic—a competitor that prioritizes the enterprise market and holds a relatively lower share in the consumer market—has around 200 million to 300 million users.
Google emphasized, "Our goal is to make Gemini the most personalized, proactive, and powerful assistant."
