The U.S. military fired upon a Panama-flagged vessel that attempted to breach the U.S. maritime blockade against Iran on the 11th (local time), the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing a U.S. official.
Early that morning, when the vessel's crew ignored warnings from U.S. forces enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports, a U.S. military helicopter fired toward the ship's rudder, the official said.
No casualties have been reported yet as a result of the incident, according to the WSJ.
Following the attack, the vessel appeared to have attempted to transfer its crew members to another civilian ship, the official added.
Also that day, British maritime security firm Vanguard stated that the Panama-flagged container ship Bella Nova was struck by a missile fired from a helicopter while sailing westward in the Gulf of Oman, about 71 nautical miles (131 kilometers) off the coast of Pakistan, the WSJ reported.
Vanguard stated that a missile struck the vessel causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished, adding that the safety of all 17 crew members has been confirmed.
