Amid the booming box office success of director Christopher Nolan's new film "Odyssey," ticket scalping—reselling IMAX tickets at exorbitant prices—is running rampant.
For the IMAX theater at Yongsan I'Park Mall, all available screening sessions up to the 25th are sold out, except for wheelchair-accessible seats in the front row.
Meanwhile, major second-hand trading platforms continue to see posts from scalpers selling IMAX tickets at a markup.
There are also numerous posts from buyers offering high prices in advance to secure tickets.
Consequently, illegal ticket prices have skyrocketed.
A set of three consecutive seats for the evening screening on the 14th is priced at nearly 300,000 won.
Considering that regular weekend tickets for the Yongsan IMAX cost in the 20,000 won range per person, this is more than four times the original price.
Even morning screenings eligible for weekday early-bird discounts sold out, leading to listings reselling a pair of seats for nearly 280,000 won.
Despite this chaos, there are no proper ways to sanction these bulk buyers and scalpers.
An official from one platform stated, "We do not have uniform trading restriction standards regarding the resale of movie tickets," adding, "We have not received any requests for cooperation from relevant authorities to date."
An official from another platform noted, "Movie tickets fall into a blind spot in the resale sector," and explained, "We face difficulties in imposing individual sanctions."
Netizens have reacted to this price inflation with comments such as "It's getting out of hand" and "I wish platforms would make an example out of them by permanently banning their accounts."
