A Japanese media outlet has reported that Gus Poyet, the 58-year-old Uruguayan former manager of K League 1 side Jeonbuk Hyundai, is being discussed as the interim head coach for the South Korean national football team.
Citing multiple sources, Japanese sports outlet Sponichi reported today (August 11) that "Poyet, who managed South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai until last season, is the leading candidate for the new national team head coach position, and his appointment is practically certain."
The outlet projected that Poyet will serve as the interim manager for six upcoming national team friendly matches scheduled from this coming September to November.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) recently announced an open recruitment process for an interim national team manager through its official website.
The plan is to manage the six A-matches held from September to November under an interim manager and coaching staff system while simultaneously initiating the recruitment process for the next permanent head coach.
With applications for the interim manager open recruitment having closed last Sunday, Poyet told SBS, "I have submitted my application and am waiting for the KFA's results."
The KFA plans to appoint some members of the National Team Committee and external members within this week to form an evaluation committee, followed by video interviews next week.
