More than 50,000 defects have been reportedly found at a newly built apartment complex in Songdo International City, Incheon, where an exterior terrace collapsed just one year and six months after completion.
According to Representative Jung Il-young of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Yeonsu-gu B, Incheon) on August 11, a total of 57,296 defect complaints have been filed regarding the 1,114-household apartment complex since move-ins began in March of last year.
Various defects were found throughout the complex and individual units, including 8,873 cases involving wallpaper, 6,364 cases of plastering, and 4,778 cases of tiling.
Among them, 54,101 cases have been repaired, while 3,195 cases remain pending.
With defect complaints continuing to pour in, the exterior terrace collapse has left residents feeling anxious about their safety beyond mere inconvenience, Representative Jung conveyed.
Some residents are reportedly demanding a complete reconstruction of the complex.
Representative Jung stated, "Residents' trust has effectively collapsed. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport needs to step in directly to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and the structural safety of the entire complex, and inspect whether similar safety issues exist at other project sites involving the same builder."
Jung added, "At the plenary session of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, I plan to question the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport regarding the cause of the accident and where responsibility lies, while urging a thorough investigation and safety check through authoritative investigative bodies such as the ministry's Construction Accident Investigation Committee."
