Incheon's newly launched Geomdan and Yeongjong districts, which were established last month, have been found to have more security closed-circuit television (CCTV) blind spots compared to other autonomous districts in Incheon.
According to Incheon City and other sources on August 11, as of the 1st of last month, the number of installed security CCTVs was tallied at 995 for Geomdan District and 1,006 for Yeongjong District.
Among the 11 counties and districts in the Incheon region, the only place with fewer CCTVs than Geomdan and Yeongjong districts was Ongjin County (437 units), which consists entirely of islands.
In contrast, Michuhol District had the highest number of CCTVs at 2,689, followed by Namdong District (2,640), Yeonsu District (2,569), and Bupyeong District (2,311).
The number of CCTV installations per 1 square kilometer was approximately 20 for Geomdan District and 8 for Yeongjong District, making them the lowest among the 9 districts excluding Ganghwa County and Ongjin County.
In fact, under the same criteria, Michuhol District reached 108 units, Bupyeong District 72 units, and Jemulpo District 65 units.
This highlights that CCTV blind spots are prominent mainly in Geomdan and Yeongjong districts, which were newly launched following Incheon's administrative system reorganization on the 1st of last month.
Security CCTVs play a core role in establishing a social safety net by preventing crimes through 24-hour recording and providing investigative clues and evidence when incidents occur.
Concerns over security gaps tend to grow as there are more blind spots not covered by CCTV, such as deserted alleys or outskirts of the city.
In particular, the need for expanding CCTVs is being raised given that Geomdan District is an area experiencing a rapid population surge due to large-scale urban development projects, while Yeongjong District has a high floating population and many visitors as it encompasses Incheon International Airport.
A veteran investigator with over 20 years of experience said, "Yeongjong Island clearly lacks CCTV installations relative to its area, which sometimes causes difficulties in investigations," adding, "There is a need to expand the social safety net taking the launch of the autonomous districts as an opportunity."
