Movie theaters are packed these days.
The reason is none other than the heatwave.
As the weather has become extremely hot, movie theaters are emerging as a budget-friendly summer shelter for the elderly.
On the 6th, when temperatures approached 40°C (104°F), a movie theater in Jongno, Seoul, was crowded with elderly visitors.
Those aged 65 and older can receive a senior discount and watch a movie for 7,000 won.
The roughly two hours spent watching a movie allow them to stay in a cool indoor space, and with no need to buy popcorn or drinks, the burden of additional costs is low.
A silver movie theater in Jongno sells tickets for 2,000 won.
A ticket booth staff member said, "Judging by the feel, 20 to 30 percent more people are coming than usual," adding, "There are even people who buy tickets for two consecutive movies."
This is interpreted as a way to stay in the air-conditioned indoor space by buying one more cheap movie ticket rather than going outside after one movie ends, because it is still too hot out.
