The Okcheon Police Station in North Chungcheong Province announced today (August 10) that it has booked a woman in her 60s, identified as A, without detention on charges of vehicular manslaughter under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents after she ran over and killed her 90-year-old mother-in-law while parking a vehicle in her home garage.
A is accused of striking and killing her mother-in-law, B, who was squatting and resting on the garage floor at around 2:00 PM the previous day while parking her sedan in the garage of a detached house in Okcheon.
According to the investigation, A had returned from church with her husband and was driving the sedan forward into the garage when the front part of the driver's side struck B.
It was reported that because the garage entrance is on an incline, B was not clearly visible from the driver's seat.
A reportedly stated during police questioning, "I only realized the accident had occurred after getting out of the car."
Based on statements from family members that B habitually rested in the garage, police are investigating whether A fulfilled her duty of care as a driver.
