Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung visited a mobile worker shelter in Mapo-gu, Seoul, this morning (August 10) to inspect the operational status of heatwave response facilities.
This on-site inspection was conducted to check the accessibility and convenience of heatwave shelters for vulnerable groups, including mobile workers, as the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters was upgraded to Level 2 on August 2 amid a prolonged, record-breaking nationwide heatwave.
Minister Yoon toured the interior of the shelter, checked facility operations such as air conditioning status and weekend extended hours, and encouraged the officials operating the mobile worker shelter.
He also listened to various opinions regarding shelter use, including inconveniences reported by mobile workers and general citizens using the facility.
During the inspection, Minister Yoon stated, "The government regards the current heatwave situation as a national disaster and places the highest priority on protecting the lives of its citizens." He added, "Through the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters, we are closely managing response efforts between central and local governments with an all-out pan-governmental response, and we will spare no support to minimize casualties and ensure that all vulnerable groups, including mobile workers, can safely get through the summer."
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to devise measures to improve the operation of heatwave shelters together with central and local governments, reflecting the difficulties and user feedback identified during this inspection.
