Public opinion poll results released on August 10 showed that President Lee Jae-myung's approval rating for state affairs dropped for the fourth consecutive week, hitting its lowest level since taking office.
According to the survey conducted by Realmeter commissioned by Energy Economy News on 2,514 adults aged 18 and older nationwide from August 3 to 7, the positive evaluation of President Lee's state administration stood at 43.3%, down 2.6 percentage points from the previous week.
The negative evaluation rose 2.5 percentage points from the previous week to 53%, outpacing the positive evaluation outside the margin of error (±2.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level) for the second consecutive week.
Respondents who answered "do not know" accounted for 3.6%.
Realmeter analyzed, "The downward trend in positive evaluations continued for the fourth consecutive week as overlapping factors—including controversies over real estate tax reform and amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act, the fallout from remarks regarding a Korea Military Academy coup, as well as heatwaves and economic instability—led to an expansion of defection primarily among Seoul residents, conservatives, and older adults."
In a party support rate survey conducted on 1,007 adults aged 18 and older nationwide on August 6 and 7, the Democratic Party recorded 44.6% and the People Power Party recorded 37.6%.
The Democratic Party dropped 0.5 percentage points and the People Power Party edged down 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous survey.
Realmeter assessed, "The Democratic Party saw a slight decline in support due to the defection of supporters in Seoul and among conservative groups, driven by controversies over real estate tax reform and deepening factional conflicts among party leadership candidates in the national convention."
Regarding the People Power Party, it interpreted, "While Seoul, Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK), and conservative groups rallied through offensive strategies against the government's tax reform bill and Criminal Procedure Act amendments, internal disciplinary strife and leadership gaffes offset these gains, resulting in a stagnant support rate."
The approval ratings for the Rebuilding Korea Party and the Reform Party were both recorded at 2.9%, followed by the Progressive Party at 1.5%.
Other parties stood at 1.7%, and respondents with no political affiliation accounted for 9%.
Both surveys were conducted via wireless automated response systems.
The survey on the president's state affairs evaluation had a sampling error of ±2.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level and a response rate of 4%.
The party support rate survey had a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level and a response rate of 3.4%.
